Hank Johnson and Sydney Kamlager-Dove), would add a presumption against lyrics to the Federal Rules of Evidence, but it has never received a vote. Johnson: 'For too long, artists – particularly young Black artists – have been unfairly targeted by prosecutors who use their lyrics as evidence of guilt.' Courts split: New Jersey's Supreme Court threw out a conviction in State v. Skinner (2014), finding violent lyrics had 'little to no probative value' and noting 'rap lyrics in particular are part of a genre of music that society often finds distasteful,' while federal courts have generally admitted them more readily. Researchers Charis Kubrin and Erik Nielson found that when identical violent lyrics were labelled 'rap' rather than country, people judged them more dangerous, threatening and literal.",
